Vice President, AI / Machine Learning Software Engineer at BNY Mellon

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Vice President, AI / Machine Learning Software Engineer to join our Global Payments & Trade CAO team.

In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways: AI Solution Engineering Design and develop AI-powered applications, autonomous agents, copilots, and intelligent automation solutions.

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following: Experience 10+ years of software engineering, AI engineering, machine learning, or data engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Build and integrate LLM-based applications using frameworks such as LangChain, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, CrewAI, or equivalent.
• Implement responsible AI, model governance, explainability, and monitoring capabilities.
• Design reusable AI engineering components and accelerate solution delivery through standardized frameworks.
• Develop data workflows supporting AI and analytics use cases.
• Build integrations with enterprise systems, APIs, databases, and cloud services.
• Ensure data quality, lineage, security, and governance standards are upheld.
• Support production AI workloads and continuously improve solution reliability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, data, business, risk, compliance, and technology stakeholders.

Required qualifications

• Minimum 8+ years of hands-on experience building Generative AI applications.

• Technical Skills Programming Python (Expert) SQL (Advanced) JavaScript/TypeScript (Preferred) REST API development AI/ML Large Language Models (GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, etc.) Prompt Engineering Agentic AI architecture RAG implementations Machine Learning fundamentals NLP and document intelligence Data Engineering Databricks, Spark, or equivalent Data pipelines and workflow orchestration Structured and unstructured data processing Cloud Platforms Experience with one or more: Microsoft Azure (Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, Fabric, Data Factory) AWS (Bedrock, SageMaker, Glue, Lambda, EMR) MLOps / DevOps GitHub / Azure DevOps Docker Kubernetes (preferred) MLflow CI/CD pipelines Monitoring and observability tools Databases SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Snowflake Vector databases (ChromaDB, Pinecone, Weaviate, MongoDB Atlas Vector Search) NoSQL databases Leadership & Delivery Lead small teams of AI engineers and developers on multiple concurrent initiatives.

• Develop Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions leveraging vector databases and enterprise knowledge stores.
• Fine-tune, evaluate, and optimize AI models for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
• AI Architecture & Platform Development Translate business requirements into scalable AI solution designs and technical architectures.
• Define patterns for agent orchestration, prompt management, tool integrations, memory management, and context engineering.
• Participate in architecture reviews and technology evaluations.
• Data Engineering Design and build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and curate structured and unstructured data.
• Engineer datasets for machine learning and generative AI applications.
• MLOps & AI Operations Build CI/CD pipelines for machine learning and AI applications.
• Automate model deployment, monitoring, retraining, and lifecycle management processes.
• Implement observability, logging, performance metrics, and drift detection mechanisms.
• Experience leading technical workstreams or small engineering teams.
• Mentor junior engineers and establish engineering best practices.
• Drive technical decision-making and code quality reviews.
