The role supports a broad technology landscape, including Elasticsearch, AWS Managed Databases, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and related cloud database services.

They participate as a supporting player on complex infrastructure and database projects, follow established operational practices, seek guidance when needed, and are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions and respectfully challenge the status quo.

Role Expectations

Project delivery

Supports database infrastructure projects from requirements and design through build, testing, go-live, handover, and decommissioning

Helps gather workload, capacity, availability, recovery, security, networking, and support requirements

Assists with provisioning and configuration of Elasticsearch, AWS Managed Databases, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and related services

Follows approved patterns for naming, tagging, sizing, topology, access, encryption, backups, monitoring, and alerting

Supports migration, upgrade, patching, scaling, replication, and cutover activities with appropriate supervision

Performs validation and testing before production release, including connectivity, functionality, performance, backup, restore, and failover checks

Maintains accurate project documentation, architecture details, implementation notes, known issues, and operational handover information

Identifies gaps in monitoring, alerting, runbooks, access, backup, recovery, and support readiness before go-live

Day-to-day operations

Starts with read-only investigation, verifies the target environment, and seeks peer confirmation before production-impacting actions

Helps diagnose common operational issues such as connectivity failures, high latency, slow queries, lock contention, replication lag, cluster imbalance, shard or partition pressure, cache eviction, and storage capacity risk

Captures timelines, evidence, hypotheses, actions, validation results, and outstanding follow-ups clearly in the appropriate support record

Updates operational documentation when procedures, platform behavior, ownership, dashboards, or escalation paths change

Escalates early when customer impact is high, the issue is outside the documented procedure, or a proposed action has material risk

Collaboration and growth

Collaborates with team members to co-develop solutions and solve infrastructure and database problems

Proactively connects with peers across environments and technology teams to learn, coordinate, and resolve issues

Seeks support from subject matter experts and senior engineers when the problem exceeds their current experience

Participates in code reviews, design discussions, incident reviews, and project ceremonies

Takes advantage of opportunities to build deeper expertise in one or more database technologies while maintaining awareness of the broader platform landscape

Understands the importance of system and technology integration across databases, applications, networks, cloud services, monitoring, and security controls

Builds familiarity with highly available, distributed systems used for data storage, retrieval, caching, search, extraction, ingestion, and processing

Applies software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals to day-to-day engineering and automation work

Executes tasks and provides data or technical inputs that support holistic solutions across people, process, technology, and platform architecture

Learns when policies and processes are standardized and when they differ across teams, environments, technologies, and operational scenarios

Maintains awareness of advancements and changes in data engineering, database technologies, cloud platforms, data models, enterprise information management, business intelligence, and data science

Reports work status, risks, dependencies, and blockers clearly and on time

Asks thoughtful and challenging questions when empowered to do so

Feels comfortable respectfully challenging assumptions, authority, or the status quo when there is a clear technical or operational rationale
